canopy and m/h fixture

So far, I just don't think things through.
I bought a Coralife 72 Inch Aqualight 3x150W HQI... It is almost as big as the opening on my tank. I sure didn't think about that measurement. I did screw the legs on that wouldn't work in the track, now my canopy won't fit, so....so I thought about hanging it. Since I have a canopy hanging it would be in the way to take off the canopy. It is really a two person job, at least for me, since I am of the um let's see, elderly female type. I hope you are following this. I am not the best at explaining my thoughts. My next thought would be to mount it to the top of the canopy and cut out holes where the fans are, so then I can just lift the lid and the lights would move out of the way as well. Just seems like it would work out so easy. Any thoughts on what would work the best. Sucks to get a new (used) light and it just doesn't work out.

I'm sure it can work out somehow but a picture of the canopy and light might help get the design ideas flowing.

is the light new? if not and you really want to use it. pull it apart and dont use the light casing just mount the rest of it inside the canopy

No, it's not new. I have little to no knowledge of wiring stuff. I would hate to ruin the light altogether. I have been known to do stuff like that.

I had to cut a part of my back support leg about 3 inches upward, and about 1 inch wide. that is, I cut that little part off.
Then I cut half of the entire front support upward in half. I can fit my light in there now... The reason I cut the front leg in half was to allow myself to flip the light upward to get my hand in the tank!

She (the dog) is my other money pit. We have three of them.

Is the outside measurement of the new fixture more than the inside measurement of the canopy. I've done a few things in this area that would make Rube Goldberg proud (Who remembers him?); but all my ideas would depend on the measurements. But then; it would be easier to suggest things that would ruin your stuff than mine.

I don't understand what you are saying. Was it mounted to the top or just in the canopy?

If the new fixture fits inside the canopy; any lighting supply place that does repairs could do the work for you. Shouldn't be expensive.

All you would have to do is raise the canopy to allow the lights to fit inside. Get 3' ice cap fans, attach them kitty corner, one pulling air in, and one pushing air out. You wouldn't have to drill any holes in the canopy. the back is already open enough to allow air to pass.
To raise the canopy attach 2' blocks to the contact blocks already on the canopy. You won't even notice the 2' difference.
Here is a close up of the edge of my canopy, you can barely see the edge as anything different. My canopy, like yours, is pine color like the edge of the tank. It looks like one piece.
I removed the flip top and just have the lights raised up just a tiny bit inside.

I know I wouldn't explain myself right. I can fit the light inside the canopy if I take off the legs. But then I wouldn't be able to get in the tank, not even for feeding. It is that wide, since I have the narrow tank. That is why I was asking about connecting it to the lid of the canopy.

If you put the light inside the canopy, then attach the light to the lid, can you still open the lie with the light attached?

I am hoping that I can just lift the lid back and the light would go with it when I need to feed and whatever else. I don't know why it wouldn't.
