Canopy Height

This weekend I am building my first canopy..
It is for a 6' 150 gal with 3 250 watt 10k mhs and actinic strip. I dont have corals yet but plan on getting some soon.
My question is this-- How high should the canopy be-or more precicely, how far from the water should the mh lights be??
This is the tank presently:

My canopy for my 150 is about 14 inch tall, they light bulb is about 10 inches off the water.

and WHOA!!
Spider thats a big um canopy you got there ;)
:) hehe we wanted a specific type of a custom canopy and our cabinet builder did a great job. He built a fully adjustable lighting shelf so that we can move the lights up and down as we wish. Also I wanted the second shelf above the canopy to house some glass fish and fake corals.

Well, looking forward to seeing it in action at some point.
I am just going simple as this is my first attempt and want to dumb it down for me. LOL I just hope the light comes on and doesnt burn my house down..

Nice, I really wish mine was wider and not as tall. I am a short person and its hard to reach the bottom of the tank.
Good luck, looks great so far.
