canopy vs no canopy

i have major issues with salt creep on my tank. i live in Hawaii and it is very humid so the water evaporation causes the water levels to sink under my power head and under my filter output and thus splashing occurs. it also doesn't help that my water level is almost to the rim of my aquarium, i cannot drop it as my filter i cut the tubing too short and no where here sells it since it is a cannister filter i have to pre order it.

so basically to stop this i was wondering which would be better/nicer in the end. a glass canopy or just leaving it open and topping it off daily; didn't top it off before too lazy but now im going to be up it's @ss topping it off daily. also my aquarium light is pretty bright and can heat up the water as well not sure if a canopy would help or not.

if i do buy a canopy how do i cut off the parts i don't need for filter purposes like my filter tubing? i believe they only sell glass ones here if i have to order acrylic ones i have to pay an arm and a leg just for shipping.

If you add glass tops, it limits oxygen exchange and causes the pH to decrease. It's not good for tank inhabitants.

You need to keep topping off your tank with rodi water, daily to keep the water level the same and the salinity constant. If it is evaporating that much your salinity is going up.

Hi,

A glass top and a canopy are two different things.

First, if the water is too high, the solution is to recut another hose....get busy and order the new one, so at least there is a light at the end of the tunnel. A canopy is open in the back, so you can have all the equipment you want back there. Find a person who is handy, and have them make a wood canopy for you, it really makes the tank look better, more finished. A canopy is not a necessity, but it sure makes a difference in appearance.

You will need to eliminate all splashing to prevent salt creep. Whatever you do, don't put a glass lid/top over your (filled to the very rim) tank. ..believe me the glass top won't prevent splashing, the water will just splash all over the glass top instead...it will inhibit your gas exchange, and it will get so crusty it stops all your lighting from being able to light up the tank. You would have to clean it everyday, and it will get to the point it won't come clean because of the calcium deposits it will develop all over the glass.

alright thanks. yea i thought a canopy and glass top were the same they don't sell canopies here got to order them online but don't think i will buy one my tank isn't a show piece it's a used aquarium few chips and scratches and the trimmings are beat up.

guess i will just top it off daily; waiting for my ro/di filter to come in have been using tap water sadly for the past year. other then that i actually figured how to stop the splashing. seems that my powerhead is causing the major issue. it is too strong. bought a weaker power head works great and water movement isn't too strong but strong enough. have to buy another power head and use the strong one for my ro/di to mix the salt.

Don't forget to order the longer hose if you need it for your Filter, so you don't have to fill the tank beyond the bottom of the rim. My 90g is pretty beat up too, it's very old. The Canopy hides the worn out looking trim and make the whole thing look like a fancy piece of furniture. I had a 56g tall tank that I couldn't find a canopy to fit...I paid Snakeblitz to make me one, he did a great job. Making a canopy is really easy, anyone who knows how to measure and cut wood can make one. It wouldn't cost much in material, and you can have somebody handy that lives near you do it.

You would need three sections of 6 inch pieces of wood (front... 2 sides) then a very thin 1/2 inch strip to run along the inside for the wood sections to rest on the rim. Snakeblitz also made a thin piece of wood in the back (near the top so it wouldn't interfere with hanging equipment) to stabilize the whole thing and make it more sturdy. Stain or paint it to match your stand, and there you go.

no i don't think the hose is needed. if i just let the water sink a little it should be fine. i think it was just because my power head was too strong and i filled it too much. if anything i will just order one. hmm if it is simple to make my dad can make one then. he is a contractor but i don't think i will care for a canopy on this tank it is just way to beat up. it's like putting make up on a pig. was planning on either upgrading in the future or just buying a new tank of the same size. my mom needs a tank as she only has like a 5gallon tank.

my hose for the filter is about half and inch to an inch below the rim is that good enough? i usually see peoples output around the same height never really low.
