can't find southdown

I've tried to find this product under the names Southdown, Old Castle and Yardright, but no one at Home Depot is very helpful. I did find what sounds like a similar product on Lowe's website. I can't post the website, but it is called Quikrete "Premium Play Sand" (item #10392). Can I remove my CC and put this in my tank? I'd love to hear from those with some experience please. :help:
I've got a 55 gallon with 45 pounds of LR, 2 clowns, 1 star, and some cleaners. I have another 45 pounds of LR that will arrive (ordered online) this week and will be added (after curing) in another 2 weeks or so.
Thank you!!

None of the southdown, Old Castle or Yardright is available in your part of the country. It's not available around here but, a guy in our local club ordered in a pallet of it. The quickcrete is a silica based sand while the others are arrogonite.

Wrassecal,
Thanks for the help! When you say a guy from your club, you mean a salt water club? Is a pallet the minimum order size?
Also, isn't there any other arrogonite based sand besides Southdown that I can find locally?
Thanks again,
Mike

How much would it cost to ship something like that? 50 pounds coast to coast (well, almost)? I am interested if you can find out the shipping cost. I am expecting more LR to arrive from an online source tomorrow. After it cures I'm going to remove my CC (beginner mistake) and want to put in a DSB.
Thanks!!

When I checked out shipping, it was just as cheap to buy arrogonite at the lfs. Shipping costs a lot because of the weight.

OK, I have an update on my search for Southdown and would like any more feedback ANYONE can give. :help:
I went to another Home Depot on my lunch today (the 4th one so far). Today I got lucky and had a very helpful employee do some searching for me. Apparently "Old Castle" is a brand name and NOT the name of a type of sand or another name for Southdown. He called his (Home Depot's) rep at Old Castle and both let me know they'd never heard of Southdown.

This Home Depot did carry 2 different types of sand. One was labeled "play sand" and came in a white bag. The other was labeled construction sand (I think??) and came in a brown bag. I couldn't find any indication on either bag that they were arrogonite or silicon based. Does anyone know if I can use either of these sands?
Again, I appreciate any help that anyone can give!!

Good luck finding that sand, I have also been looking for a source out here. Im going to try the smaller shops but that probably wont get me anywhere either. For the time being I am using the sand called "play sand". I set up a 10 gallon tank and mixxed up some salt water and put in about 10-15 pounds of the play sand. At first the water was very cloudy but 2 days later it is pretty clear and looking good. I still have to do some tests to see how the water is but at least it looks good.
btw, Im also in Phoenix

Best way to find this is to find someone local besides a big place like home depot or lowes. I was lucky enough to find a forum that caters to missouri ppl lol. ppl all around have it I just cant get my dad to drive and get it lol. So I went to a pet shop and bought just regullar sand it isnt alive it cost 3 something for 5lbs and then I bought a 20lb back of live sand it was 27 something for 20lbs lol. But that is all I could do cause shipping sand would come to the same price.

I just recently went to Home Depot myself and was confronted with the exact two kinds of sand that you mentioned. I remember people saying Old Castle was a good brand, and plus it said play sand on the front, so I bought the brown bag. If it turns out to be the wrong thing, it was still only four bucks. It's not in my tank yet, but I am interested to know if it's silicon based or not as well. :)
Edit: Well I just called my local Lowe's out of curiosity. The operator spent five minutes trying to find the brand in her computer, so I was transferred to a guy who said that they have one type of playsand in stock but that it has no brand. That sure helped a lot. Is there any manufacturer that wouldn't put their logo somewhere on the sand? I wish they had been more helpful, but I guess a trip down there is in order. :)

Something to do take some sand out put some vinger on it "think it is vinger make a post and ask to make" if it bubbles then you can use it in your tank and it will be fine.
