Canthigaster puffers

how agressive are theys guys? will they munch down on my clean up crew, or will they be ok because of their size. I am wanting a cool fish in a 30 gal, and decided against the snowflake eel, as I like a cleanup crew to do my scrubbing for me.

They are not real aggressive but can be fin nippers of other fish. They are not reef safe tho and they will eat your inverts and some corals that fit into their small mouths.

thats kind of a bummer, cuz everything i want, i can't have.
any suggestions for a cool reef fish? i want a cool animal that wont eat snails, hermits or anenomes, that will live in a 30 gal.

I have a small sharpnose puffer that is pretty mean. So far he has "nipped" the fins, thus inducing death on:
Sixline wrasse
Niger Trigger
Domino Damsel
Coral Beauty
Got him for $20 and so far he has help kill about $65 dollers worth of fish. I am still kind of fond of him, he has a lot or personality.

I have a small African Pygmy Angel in my reef that does very well and is a cute little fish. The only problem is they are supposed to be the last in as they get mean to new arrivals. Mine gets along with its mates such as Coris Wrasse Juv; Maroon Clown; Fire goby; 3 shrimps: Sally Lightfoot Crab; Royal Gramma; Red Lip Blennie: Iridis Wrasse. Actually the Red Lipped Blennie is a stitch to have also, very active and cute .

That kind of bites that a puffer wont work in my tank.
I am really wanting a puffer or eel of some sort. I have a clown, and he's cool and I allready have a Coral Beauty angel, but nothing else except for the clean-up crew consisting of:
20 margarita snails
10 Astrea snails
15 Cerith snails
15 left handed hermits
10 red hermits
A brittle star
and an arrow crab
are all these guys going to be lunchmeat for a puffer? are they THAT agressive, they look so small and docile in the tank at my LFS. hard to believe.
The pigmy angel might work, but With one angel allready, I might want to go with something different.
I guess what I'm looking for is someone to tell me to do it anyway, but if not, of the 2 which would be easiest on the clean-up crew?

Well at least your honest about what you want. But Knight it won't work it is not that they are agressive that way they just like to eat and eat anything they can get in their mouths. You might want to consider a small wrasse of some sort they are neat fish and active and colorful. Since you have a Angel I'd forget the African (not sure they would get along). Lets do it another way I'll give you a list of reef safe fish.
Blennies; Cardinals; Gobies; Jawfish; Wrasses; Tangs; and my book says eels (hm I wonder about that one tho) in checking my other 2 books it says no not with inverts so scratch eels. There were some others but ones that I don't think add much to a tank. Tangs get big and get Ick to easy for my liking so scratch them to. I think if it were I it would be either a blennie, gobie, or wrasse which would add some fun to the tank. But please no Puffer.

pufferlover,
thanks for your candor, i appreciate the replies. as always, you have been very helpful.
dont worry, I wouldnt torture any animal intentionaly, it just a little frustrating to set your scope on something and then realize you cant have it.
guess i just need to get another tank, for a puffer and a snowflake eel. that will solve both problems, but will cause an economic $$$ issue, that i will face on down the road.
later,
aaron

Now your talking my langauge. How do you think I ended up with 10 tanks (whoops 11 as of today). Most of my tanks have 2 to 3 fish in them and that is because I want certain fish but know I can't keep them with others I want so more tanks ended up going up. For that Puffer and a snowflake only a 29 (fairly cheap at major pet chain stores) gallon would work as long as you don't add more then one other fish. Anyway welcome to the hobby of kings as I call it (you have to be one to afford it lol).

well, im a college student, so I'm not the most economically sound person though, but I shop around and find good deals, and everything seems to have gone together fairly well. (I hunted down southdown sand like a hawk)
but when the good ol' IRS gets me my $300.00 the first week of sept, i think I'll browse the classifieds and see what I can find.

knight is right you would need to go small Puffer if you don't want to have to buy a bigger tank within a year or so. Now also if you can find a Green Spotted or Figure 8 Puffer that has been kept in full salt (they are brackish Puffers some stores sell them one way others full salt) it would also work since it gets to about 3 to 5 inches max and that takes a couple of years to happen. Make sure you have rockwork for the eel to hide under and a tight fitting top to keep it in the tank (they are escape artisits) but the snowflakes are a great fish to keep and very interesting in their behaviour. Good luck!

Thanks. I have kept green spotted puffers in freshwater. They were actually a very very mean species, so I am thinking about going with the valentini.

Well they can be mean as most Puffers can but if only a eel is in there and larger then the Puffer I don't think it would go near the eel. I have kept baby Dogfaces with my large eel for a time and they sure stayed away from the eels area and at feeding they got no where near the eel. But to be safe the valentini would be a better choice but not a small one or the eel will go after it at night. Heck my eel went after a large Maroon clown who dares to live near the eels rocks, they have since made up (for now at least).

What do you think about a 40 gallon with a valentini puffer, a snowflake eel, and a marine betta? Or is that too much?
Also, is CC the best substrate for for the puffer and eel so I can clean it more easy?

The Puffer and eel or the eel and Betta I can see but since the betta is a predatory fish and does eat smaller fish if given the chance I think the Puffer who at best might get to 3" would be in danger in a 40. My books say err on the side of caution with the Betta and do not keep with smaller fish. CC is my favorite as it is easier to siphon and keep clean and as long as the eel has rocks to hide under sand is not needed. I realize sand is getting to be the in thing but I am still a CC person.

Maybe I will hold off on the betta... Is there any other fish I could put with the eel and the puffer since I can't have inverts?

i can see how you prefer cc pufferlover, as you keep agressive fish. for reef tanks though, ive got to tell you, CC is a pain in the hind end, cuz you cand really get in to vaccuum all the places without tearing apart your rockwork. I love LS, cuz it always looks clean, the cleanup crew does most the work for me.
