nope - cars' off. i thought maybe there was some sort of vapor lock so i took the gas cap off and ran it for about 5-10 minutes, put the cap on, then drove to another gas station but still no luck

Just out of curiousity, when was the last time you put gas in the car? Was the gas gauge on anything but 'E'? Could be your fuse blew for the gas gauge. Did you try to just slowly add gas, instead of pressing the pump handle all the way down? How about trying to add gas with a small gas can? Unfortunately, the generic 'engine' light doesn't mean much these days. You'd have to take it in and let a service person hook a diagnostic computer to your car to read to codes to see why the light turned on. Not being able to add gas to the tank doesn't make any sense. Unless something got pushed down into the tank and is blocking the opening.

well the gas came back out of the tank the first time so i know it's not the gas gauge it's something to do with the line or the evap box thing is about all i can come up with

It has to do with the angle that the nozzle is placed into your fill spout. Try inserting it in at different depths. What is happening is the gas is splashing back and cutting off the flow. You might just have a very sensitive overflow valve. Try moving the nozzle around at different angles and depths.

Some stations have it where you have to push the gas dispenser against your car (the area where you put your gas in) or it will lock you out from dispensing gas and wont know when your car is full or not. I get lazy sometimes (because Im crying at buying 91-100 oct and the tears blur my vision) and dont push the dispenser all the way up against the 'hole' of the car and it just shuts off. I'm sure if you just kept pumping it on and off it would not sense that your car is full and just spill all over.
sorry but Red Wings > Pens

After several weeks of intermittend codes or P0455, suddenly I could no longer fill the gas tank easily. I had to let gas trickle in.
Dealer mechanic said fuel tank would not pressure test so they replaced my locking gas cap that I used for three years, then it pressure tested okay. They also replace the charcoal cannister ($152) and the cannister control valve (solenoid) for another $40.
I bench tested the cannister and found no leaks or anything else wrong with it. I tested the cannister control valve and nothing was wrong with it.
Fuel tank filled up okay.

well, i guess i'll try the gas cap - i can do that myself. god i hope its not the charcoal cannister - i definitely don't want to put $150 in a vehicle i'm selling!!!

some cars are made not to allow the gas to go in as fast as the pumps are pumping. In most of the newer cars there is a screen part way down that if you fill to fast the gas will hit it splash back and cause it to kick off.
does it kick off when the pump is in the lowest setting?
Just a thought on why it might be doing it. I know my 2001 saturn wont take gas at the full pump volume I have to pump in at the first or second click to get it to stay on.
