I am not sure what kind of carbon you have, but activated carbon is good for about 48hrs. You should not run carbon all of the time in a salt system. You only use it when the water needs to be polished for clarity or to remove a med.

What kind of tank do you have Reef or FOWLR? What sized tank do you have and how many fish did you add?

i have FOWLR as of right now, planing on getting some corals and other stuff,
i added 2 clowns and a scooter blenny..
my carbon is " MATRIX carbon" by seachem. I dont know if thats active or not. i have carbon trays in my set up.
55 gal tank..

That was alot to add at once to a 55. I know it doesn't seem like much and they are probably small, but one fish per 2-3 weeks is a good rule of thumb. Your biological filtration is pretty weak right now. Keep an eye on your levels over the next couple of weeks. If you are planning on a reef then get into the habit of not using carbon now. Carbon can have ill effects on your fish as well as inverts/corals if used for a long period of time. It pulls essential elements that your corals need out of the water and can cause Head and latteral line erosion in fish. Don't get scared. I am talking about if you run carbon all of the time. You are no where near in danger yet.

okay, so how long should i run carbon?? i have had carbon in my tank since day one, should i take it out, or leave it in a while longer??

the carbon will help crystalize your water(make it clear) keep checking parameters , if everything looks cool then you should be fine to add fish in two weeks to be safe...take it slow with fish, you got to wait for your tank to get balanced to the new bioload.

yes you should phase out the carbon in the tank. it can lead to water quality issues in the long run. It can only hold so much before it will start to release it all back into the tank causing problems.

I am running a 5 gallon nano FOWLR with a HOB w/bio wheel. Do I put anything in place of the filter insert? I have heard putting LR rubble in there is helpful. The mesh is picking up the bigger bits. Please advise.
