Carbon in reef tanks

Who uses carbon in their reef tanks? I've heard that it can cause HLLE in tangs. I've been told by some people to use it and not to by others. Anyone have any experience about this?

I do not use it unless it was a brand new tank setup, my understanding is useless other than intial start up and removes good stuff!

if you mix sps and softies it will remove the chemical released by the softies that they release to try keeping sps from growing over them and shadding them

I'm assuming that's a bad thing?

Chilwil is refering to allelopathy, and yes it is a bad thing. Some soft corals, especially leathers, release a toxin that stunts the growth of SPS corals. Carbon will help reduce this.

i run carbon in my tank since i have a few softies but mainly sps i like to keep the water clean and free of any chemicals... IMO cant hurt and it makes the water crystal clear if setup correctly.... meaning gettting good flow through the entire carbon source

i have ran carbon 24/7 since day one, everything is going well got all types of corals........ some people say dont use it some say yes. one thing i have learned is that, you have to find out what you like best.

Thanks for all the replies.
I'm only keeping soft corals in my tank, so I'm assuming that I should use it. Anyone know anything about it causing HLLE in tangs?

i havent heard of it causing that
i have a clown tang a yellow tang and a powderblue tang in my tank without HLLE i think thats caused by stress and improper nutrition

I bought some carbon and a mesh bag and I was wondering if I put the bag with the carbon just in front of my return, sandwiched between the blue side of my filter pad and the black grid. You can see the picture below. The bag would be flat so the water should run through all the carbon. Do you think that would be ok?

you could try that out ui just want it in an area where its gets some water flowing through it... u dont have to have all your water going through it but just play around ull figure out in which area it works best but yeah go ahead and try it out
remember to rinse ur carbon out first to get the dust off of it

Got it.
I run carbon in my freshwater tank, so ya, a lot of black dust comes off first. It's an Eclipse tank though, so the carbon is in a filter cartridge so I really don't have to think about where to put it. Just curious, what kind of carbon do you use?

So are you guys saying I should use carbon bags in the sump of my reef tank?? Is it better to use it or not? I'm confused, sorry!

I run a 215 reef and drop a bag in for 3 days, 1 week before a water change. Cleans up the water and makes all happy.

I'm thinking of adding it after my water change, because I blow off my rock and try and clean up things just before doing my water change, so hopefully I take a lot of the floating stuff out while I'm doing the change. Then I was thinking of adding the carbon so it will do the final cleaning process for me. My thinking is why clean up the water when I'm about ready to mess it up.
