Carbon To Clear The Water?

Here's what I do for running activated carbon. I'm sure there are other ways of doing it too.
Buy good quality phosphate free carbon.
Rinse it in some RO or RO/DI water to get rid of the black dust.
I spoon the carbon into a nylon mesh bag. You can get these at most local fish store for a buck or two.
Tie up the opening of the mesh bag.
Dip it a couple more times in some fresh RO water again.
Place the bag w/carbon in the trickle plate of my wet/dry/sump, or anywhere you have good water flow over and through the bag.
Run it in your tank for however long you want. I run it for several days.
Remove it.
Some of the dissolved organics that you are wanting to eliminate from the tankwater get trapped inside the microscopic pores of the activated carbon granules. Removing the carbon after a period of time in your flowstream removes these organic wastes from your system.

Hi Guys
I placed the carbon bags (2) on the trickle plate of my wet/dry/sump.
However, I get a lot of water splashes outside of the top of the wet-drp, due to the fact that I also have my filter sponge there too - Basically not enough room for both.
I placed the two carbon bags actually in my sump where the water is.
Would that still work, or I should remove my sponge to allow the carbon bags to sit in the trickle plate?
Any suggestions
Craig
