Carbon ????

I always wondered, what exactly does using carbon, like bio wheel cabon filter pads, actually do. I know carbon is used to filter water impurites, for drinking, but what does it do for the aquarium. Does it just help nutralize ammonia, or does it do anything else???
Thanks
Rob

i think you answered your own question rob.
carbon helps to polish your water by filtering out heavy metals and other elements. i do not think it helps to remove ammoina, nitrites, or nitrate's. that would be great if it did.

But if your already using RO water, I imagine, there is't much for it to remove.
Thanks for the reply

The carbon is used to treat cloudy water (sometimes happens in an elasmobranch tank after feeding for a day) or smelly water. I think we have all smelled an aquarium without it...not something I want in my living room. Other than that, I use it temporarily in my 125 for water polishes.

i use my magnum hang on back filter for my 55 and it runs 34/7 and on the other side of the tank is a bio wheel HB filter as well cant remember the darn name and im stuck at work.. i prety much use them for water movement and for buildup of organisms what ever may grow for water polishing... i have yet had a problem with this tank... all i need now is my new overflow andill have a tidepool up and running for a sump..
