Cardinals .. can they be mixed ?

I have a silver cardanal. He is all of an inch long. His body shape is like that of a red (fire/blood) cardanal. I would like to add a pajama to my tank. But i am not sure if you can mix the species. Just want to make sure before I add the pajama

I had a pyjama in with my flame. Noticed after a while that the pyjama's tail was half gone. Had a bangaii in with the flame and he lost his tail and died before I caught the damage. Don't know if it was the flame or not. Never caught him but he "looked" suspicious. He wouldn't look me in the eye;)
Moved the pyjama and he recovered completely. I don't think I would mix them again.
