caulerpa question

I added a refugium about a month or so ago and the grape, and razor are growing like crazy.:) I run the lights 24/7. I have 2 questions. Why don't you want caulerpa to go sexual and how can you tell if it is. I haven't read anything on it and figured I would ask here.

I would never say anthem is wrong....*_^..but I run my lights on the refugium 24/7...and have since it was first set up. Most information I've seen indicates that a 24/7 photo period may prevent caluperas from going sexual. I do know there are numerous groups that use both methods with sucess(reverse photo period& 24/7)...I prefer the 24/7 option.
As for telling if it is going sexual..as anthem said you will notice it turning white(sort of mushy looking)...kind of like its bleached and lost its color...I check my refugium daily and use a long pair of tweezers to pinch off the white leaves and discard them. I've never had very much go sexual at any one time...but I've heard of it happening. As stated it can pose some serious problems if it happens.

Thanks for the replies. I have been checking the caulerpa daily for anything looking different(other then more of it) and haven't noticed any bleaching. But now I know what to look for. My nitrate level went up to 20(was usually less then 10). That is why I added a refugium. I can't get over how fast the caulerpa grows(esp the grape) Hopefully it will help the nitrates!

Don't forget to harvest it :) You haven't exported the Nitrates until you actually remove them physically from the water (harvesting the caulerpa).
