I'm new to this hobby. I have a 75 gal. with EMP. bio wheels 2 power heads and a UV. the tank has been setup for 2 mo. I have 7 damsels in it. I have CC and want to goto to sand. I was told i can push the CC over to one side and add the sand wait 2 weeks and take the CC out. Is ther a easier way ?

i can only tell you what they told me to do on this board.im still a newbie so...hope this helps....i took 3-4 nylon bags and put alot of the cc into them and put them down in various spots in the tank after i put the sand in.then let them sit in there for a few weeks.hope this helps.and if i am wrong and someone else has something better feel free to correct me. Good luck!! ps. i used regular womans nylons.

when i changed ove i set up a 10 gal to put all the live stock in while the switch was taking place and the water was clearing. it took about 9 hours to do the switch and for the water to clear. i had the filter running the whole time to speed up the process a bit.

Question for ya:
Do you have any rocks to deal with?
If not then take all the cc out at one time. If your going to add the sand then it is recommended to pre cure it for at least a week before adding.

I am changing from CC to SAND can i take my CC out and put it with some water out of my tank in a big rubber maid tub and put my 7 damsel's in and put the sand in my 75. gal . let it cycle for a week then put my fish back in ? I am also going to put a few bags of CC in with the sand to help out then remove the CC. will that work ?

I read some where that if you put sand on top of the cc. the cc will eventually reach its way back to the top and kinda defeat the purpose of the dsb. Also i read somewhere that if you wanna keep down the cloudiness you can lower a piece of pvc pipe down into the water keep it about an inch or two off the bottom and pour your new sand down the pipe . it keeps if from clouding so much.

Very bad idea, that crushed coral will still find its way to the top, it will still continue to trap detritus, and still continue to fowl your water, and it will still need to be vaccumed. After your sand underneith is mature you will have anerobic areas in it that will process the nitrates, however if you are trying to vaccum your cc and break into one of these zones you will destroy that anerobic bacteria and it to could lead to a crash of your whole system.
Not a good ideal.
One or the other or nothing.
