But yes, I do agree. These posts are getting a little bit redundant. This website is owned and operated by SWF.com. They have the right to remove anything that they deem inappropriate. The owners have bestowed that responsibility on us, moderators, and ask that we maintain a clean, family-friendly discussion board. Many members help us in doing that by reporting posts that they find inappropriate and offensive.
I totally agree with Ophiura when she said that we we allow a lot more than most other hobby sites. That could not be any more true.
Sorry Lion! I knew I was going to forget someone. My error has been fixed

I have been here for 5 years and SWF and the mods do a good job. I haven't always agreed with everything but I like overall the way things are done. I have accounts on many boards with many different interests and there is always someone who complains about the job that mods do. Even on boards that have an anything (well almost anything) goes type policy someone always manages to push the limit and then complains when the admins/mods have to step in.
If you don't like the way things are done... it is a big internet, find where you are more comfortable or get your own site

It's now getting funny how the posts seem so very familar to mine that was what 10 hours ago. I should have locked or deleted this thread 9.75 hours ago.

my 2 cents worth...
I know i'm new here but if I may.
The fact is that we are allowed to use this forum by swf.com whether we have purchased from their site or not. I may be naive but I believe they provide this as a service for 2 reasons; the first is that if you're interested in the hobby eventually you will probably make a purchase from the site, the second is because they would like to provide every opportunity for the proper care of our tanks and their inhabitants. It is not unreasonable for them to set the guidelines they have and expect them to be followed. Regardless of how long anyone has been a member the fact is we are all guests, we pay nothing for the advice we get and for the opportunity to share what we have learned. I know for a fact that it is not cheap to maintain a board of this size.
The moderators are a necessity and it seems to be pretty infrequent that posts/threads are deleted. All they ask is that we play nice and respect the guidelines and each other.

1. We discuss locked threads/deleted threads. When a thread gets deleted the mods still see it, along with a note from the mod who "deleted" it from public viewing. If anyone disagrees we can discuss it. Frankly, though, the vast majority of the time we are in complete agreement. If you are noticing more moderation I'd like to think that is a good thing. Us "new mods" hopefully are making a difference so the more experienced mods can post more. It's a shame to have folks like Beth, Bang, Viper, Ophiura, Thomas, NM Reef, Michael, Hot, Squid and Murph having to take time out to wade through the forums cleaning them up. These guys/gals are incredibly experienced and have a tremendous amount to offer the hobby. The more we can stay focused in this forum on the hobby, the more the will progress. Everytime one of these mods I mentioned stops to delete a thread or edit something they are taking away from their time they could be responding to a real question or issue.
2. Calling the boards "overmoderated" is kind of firing from the hip. Things get deleted or modded out that you dont' see. Any thread that seems to be a magnet for offensive posts will get deleted. Especially if it is in the aquarium.
Windmill, no offense to you, but I dont' want to spend my time on a SWF webpage having to "monitor" a thread about jello shots. I hope you can understand that.
3. We get email notifications whenever anyone uses the "report post" feature. Often times with questionable threads we get emails from folks complaining about the thread. So just because the thread looks like no one is offended because they haven't posted their displeasure, we still hear it. We have to make a judgment call at that point.
Finally, there are a lot of kids who read this site. Your thread talked about how as a teen you were involved in activity that many parents don't want their kids involved in. We hear from those parents. :jumping: And they are right; this a primarily a SWF website. Their shouldn't have to worry about what those kids are reading here.
I hope that explains a little better about the modding process. I was surprised and honored when asked to join on as a mod. I had no idea what I was getting myself into :notsure: There is a lot that goes on "behind the scenes" to make sure this forum stays the warm, comfortable, informative site that it is known to be.
I know what you are talking about from experience. I am a mod on the largest Disney web site. I spend so much time answering reported posts that i can't always do what i do best, respond to members questions.
Thanks mods, I REALLY know what it takes to be a good moderator

Stephish thanks for your input. On an average i delete 3-10 threads every morning when I get up and about the same after I come home from work.
It takes alot of you great members to report spam and inappropriate threads or posts and all the mods to keep the forum a decent place.
I do alot editing and as do all the mods. Thats what we get paid to do (j/k). I locked a thread this week and another mod asked me why i did that. I went back and looked at it and thought it was advertisement for another site when it was not so I reopened the thread and apologized for locking it.
We are human and we do the best we can.
It takes alot of work to be a mod. And NO we do not get paid
it's just a pleasure to be here and to help out such a wonderful site that does not charge for their service.

i have seen a dramatic increase in threads being deleted for really reasons that are not very good. like the post that i got a mantis shrimp and a 8 gallon bow front for my birthday. the link was not to another selling website on n e thing so idk. the mods do do a great job. it just seems sometimes deleted posts are questionable...... I really do like these boards but recently have not been using them as much because me and seth have found another board that allows links etc and is also local. I know its not te mods rules about links.... i just think SWF goes overboard on the whole "links thing" i really do like his board but my posts being deleted over stupid things like Links to other forums makes me want to stop coming here.... its not worth the time sometimes IMO

Dan, I deleted that thread because YOU KNOW BETTER than to post a link to another forum.
Don't try to tell me you don't figure that one. You know the rules.

Why would the owner of this Site approve you or anyone else posting competition sites. Fish or forum.

Those who actually get to read this before it gets deleted will know. Most probably already do. The mods are deleting anything and everything that even smells slightly inappropriate.
My recent thread about jell-o shots got deleted. I'll be the first to admit it wasn't informative, not many people responded, and fewer actually cared. But it was in no way offensive or vulgar or even inappropriate in my mind. I'd like to hear the reason behind that decision. "Yeah, the whole alcohol thing kinda clashes with my staunch upper-class straight-arrow bible-thumping fire and brimstone morality"
It is now nearly 8 a.m. where I am. I'd bet money this will be gone before noon.
IMO, I would rather over mod than under mod. This is about the only site my ten yr old is allowed to surf and I don't want to explain jello shots.
Imagine if there were no mods? Granted your post wasn't offensive but it approached the area.
