well yes, but now that its there, its going to be harder to get rid of than you might think.
Yes its bad, if you think you can jsut do away with it, than I suggest you do so.
phosphates and nitrates are what they live on, if you run GFO or alot of cheato in a sump you might be able to beat it and still keep the rock in the tank.

yes the hair algae sucks bad stuff, thats what makes it grow.
It will grow right over corals and kill them
if it helpful and bad at the same time why dont keep track of it?
like when it overgrow take it out cut it and put it back in then let it suck the bad things then take it out and cut it and repeat ?

When hair algea grows it spreads around the tank fast. It doesnt stay in a managable clump that slowly grows so you can cut it, it grows quickly in a bunch of differant spots.
Ive read that you can slow hair algea by getting something like cheato to take away nutrients that the hair algea uses.

Take the good advice here and get it out of there. I made the mistake of leaving a tiny tiny patch on a rock thinking a WC and changing my light schedule would control it. WRONG. I ended up taking that rock and and scrubbing it off.

Name calling will not be tolerated.
Okay things are straightened out so let's all let it go and move on...

well, the hard part about it is if you try to cut it or pull it out while the rock is in the tank little pieces of it flaot around in your tank and start growing on other things.
It would be fine (and almost kinda nice looking) if it just grew nice and thick in one place but it won't it jsut keeps spreading until its on all the rocks.

I know Ive said this a billion times, but my hair algae problem was completley cured by the addition of my turf scrubber. It took a while, but it is completely gone (except for a couple patches inside my poweheads)
