If you remove the dead stuff as it dies it will adjust itself to the amount you need. The common guidline for light is 12 hours, and like fedukeford said, the light on the fuge should be the opposite 12 hours.

What is the recommended lighting for chaeto? Can I just use a 100 watt "plant growth" bulb from Home Depot?

Not meaning to highjack thread, but my question goes with this.
My refuge is 23.5" tall. I have a 13 watt 6500K light over my refuge. My chaeto is turning like ash. That is the best way I can describe it. If I touch it, it just falls to pieces. It is a grayish color. Do I need more light?

I would definately go with more light! are you getting enough water flow in there? My chaeto hovers 6 inches from the light source which is 18watt 6500k, The ashey Chaeto means DIE OFF, it may come back though! Up the lighting see what happens!

This wattage and distance works great for me too although I think my light may be even closer like 4" above.
