Bought a whole new set up yesterday. New wet/dry filter and pump, new skimmer, new tank, new stand..ok you get it. I currently have a 55g and i want to move everything to the new tank...What is the best way to do this? I have 2 false percs, an engineer goby, seabae anemone, sallylight foot crab, green star polyps, xenia, green frogspawn, shrooms, and button polyps. I was planning on using the water from my tank plus new water... but will I be able to put my live stock in the new tank right away?

you are going to move your sand or get new sand? new rock?
assuming you are going to move almost everything i would take the fish and coral and put them in buckets or rubbermaids with powerheads running (possibly heater too) and then move everything, let it settle and then drop in livestock - after heat acclimation.

IMO, I've been planning this for awhile myself. I have a 20gal. reef only want to up grade to 72gal. bow or 90gal. Well on to the way I would start, also wanted to set up in the same location as the current tank (more fun). First need to move existing tank to temp. spot. Set up new tank using all new water, since need additional sand and rocks for larger tank i would add this first and let tank cycle. After tank cycles start the transfer of contents of old tank, put all living items into plastic container (with heater a aeration) into separate container put live rock, remove sand using siphon tube into bucket transfer to new tank then add old live rock. Let tank settle. Then and living creatures to new tank. This just what I thought of, looking forward to hearing other ideas. good luck i know you will enjoy the larger tank (more stuff).

if you have the time and space to do what limpid is talking about, then that is the better way. i did something like that when transferring a 75->150 and it didnt even re-cycle.

Since you are adding new rock and sand you get a cycle from this new stuff any way best not to put your living creatures threw this stress. as we all learned from experience that everything in this hobby takes time. Patience is what I have learned from this Hobby.

I will be getting new sand, but i have about 60lbs live rock currently and will be using the same rock. The new tank is going to be down stairs. The 55g is in my bedroom. I do have a 55gallon rubbermaid container. I get my saltwater from my lfs which is actual seawater but it is purified or something, dont remember the specifics but it works great and is easier than making my own water. So I plan on using most of my current water, besides what im using to store my live rock and livestock, and the rest 25 gallons or so will be new water from the lfs. I do have a 10g tank that i dont use.
