Changing Salt???

I have decided to change from Red Sea coral pro to Instant ocean. None of my LFS carry the Red Sea brand anymore. Is there anything I should do or shouldn't do? Do I just start to use the new salt? Can this cause any problems? Thanks.

I've never done this; but have seen this question several times on this forum. The overwhelming opinion seemed to be to just go ahead and change gradually when doing water changes. Makes sense to me, I sure never have seen any warning from a dealer to make sure you put your new fish in the same salt mix.BTW: if you have a reef tank, I'd use I.O. Reef Crystals; premium brand of IO and sold by almost anyone who sells IO. BTW, there is a major online retailer that doesn't charge extra shipping for salt. If you buy quite a bit, it is significantly cheaper than most LFSs, and delivered to your door. IO now has a 200 gal box that really saves $$.

Yup just do it through WC's. No worries! But I would seriously consider something other than IO. Thats really a down grade in salt IMHO.

What different types of salt would you guys suggest?
If IO is good enough for the Ga Aquarium and DD; its good enough for me. I've used it for years and see no reason to change. It is, by far, the biggest seller in the world. Salt is relativly cheap; I'd assume if something was better, word would spread quickly and everyone would use it.

Red Sea coral pro is most similar to Reef crystals. There is nothing wrong with IO, but it does not have the same levels of trace elements as the Coral Pro version.

I've been using IO for a few months and I only dose Seachem Reef Complete because I have a mixed reef. It's quite adequate for reefs and FOs.
I got a bucket of Reef Crystals on sale a few weeks back, so I'm going to give it a try starting on my next water change.

SeaWorld, Orlando; Shedd Aquarium, Chicago; Wonders of Wildlife Museum, Springfield, Ill.; Columbus (Ohio) Zoo & Aquarium; the (Atlanta) Georgia Aquarium; The Dallas World Aquarium; Underwater Adventure in the Mall of America, Minnesota; Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas; the Denver Zoo. all use Instant Ocean.

some people swear by instant ocean, some people swear against it.
to me instant ocean is fine for a fish only tank, but doesnt have enough for a reef tank.
most people here will recommend tropic marin, oceanic or reef crystals.

That's why IO makes Reef Crystals specifically for reef tanks.

specificly, why?
In my experience IO is the most inconsistent salt out there. Readings change from bucket to bucket. I had a "bad" bucket and have heard others having a similar problem. Now maybe reports are higher b/c it is the largest seller and has been around for a long time.
I just think coming from a "Reef" salt to IO you will see a difference in your tank. Try It!

As far as large aquariums go, lets face it, its a business. The company that will supply them and provide the largest discount will get the bid for salt. I highly doubt that it is b/c IO is a superior product compared to the other brands out there.
I use Tropic Marin. I rarely ever had to dose anything but Kalk b/c of an overloaded tank......

Yea, and Tropic Marin might be a great salt, but quite pricey at close to $100 bucks for a bucket.
I say go with IO if you want to supplement some calcium, or Reef Crystals for a good reef salt. I use IO currently but when my next bucket runs out I'm goign to try Reef Crystals, as I'd like a higher calcium level without having to dose kalc, etc.

Thanks for the suggestions, but I have finally found a place online that sells the Red Sea Coral Pro for a good price and only charges $10.00 to ship. Think I'm gonna stick with it.

Which major online retailer doesn't charge extra? Send PM if necessary. Thanks.

I have been disappointed lately with Oceanic. After using it for 4+ years, I'm finding it does not dissolve as well as before. I use fresh RO/DI in a 32 gal rubbermaid, add heater and powerhead, and add a half cup per gallon. I shake it slowly over the water, like sprinkling sugar on cereal. Two days later, it's still not crystal clear, and there is residue on sides and bottom of container and on heater and powerhead. Any comments? Should I change brands? FOWLR tank, btw.

I use reef crystals. It works for me and it's affordable. I wonder why the censor blocks the abreviation for reef crystals?
