Changing sand questions

So I pulled the rock, pulled the fish, pulled the CUC that i could find and started the process of removing the sand (quikrete) from my system so I can put in the nice pretty white limestone sand I got.
I thought my skimmate smelled nasty, buy was I in for a treat when I got to the black sand on the bottom of the bed. My wife left the room and even the dog wouldnt hang out :)
So...the question is - is that kind of anoxic area in teh sand bed good/bad and did i just buy myself a 100% water change for disturbing it?

I agree. I just did this myself actually, almost the same way you did but I drained the tank when I did it, putting the water in spare ten gallons with the fish and coral, and only left a few inches of water that I knew I could syphon out with to remove the ditrius that would be in the sand. Mine worked out great, but sorry about your delema. lol Hope all is good, we'd love before and after pics!
