Changing tanks. Need advice....

If I take everything out of my tank and transfer it to another tank will it be okay if I use new live sand. I plan on using some of the water in the first tank plus I'm using the same live rock and whisper filter which will have biological filter. I'm just wondering how much I will lose using new live sand.

What size tank are you going from and going to? Why are you going to use "new" live sand?

I'm going from a 46 to a 37 because I want to do something different with the 46. The reason that I want to change sand is because I want to use black live sand instead of the white.

To be safe I'd set up the new tank with the LS and LR and check the specs for a while before I put in the animals. If you only have one filter, heater, light etc then I would think the LS would be okay if you put it in the 37 and when you do a water change in the 46 put it in the 37. After a few water changes you should have the 37 almost full. warm up the water in the 37 to the same as the 46, check the specs and adjust if needed. Then put in the LR and then the animals. That's the way I'd handle it.

I don't have any great advice for you but you have some great questions. One thing I would like to know is if you are changing tanks, when you move the fish to the new tank should you acclimate them to the new tank in the same way that you did when you first brought them home? I'm going from a 39 gallon to a 58 gallon and there will have to be "new" water put in instead of just using water change water for the new tank.

When i upgraded from my 55 to my 210 i had both tanks running at the same time, when my new 210 was done cycling i put one fish in at a time (1 fish ~ every 2-3 weeks) and monitored the tanks!
Its important to keep both tanks going at the same timer until the new tank is established.
That way if the new tank takes a dive you can put everything back into the old tank.
