changing the top trim on 125 gallon

i'm ordering a new fixture for my 125. rather than having two 36"ers on there i'm going with a 72"er. which translates to three MH rather than two. here's the rub: my tank has a center cross brace so i have to change it out with new trim with two cross braces. two of my LFS's told me they could order me new trim, no sweat. i called the joint i originally ordered my tank from and they couldnt tell me what kind of tank it is. the one dude at elmers aquarium told me that it doesnt matter, but i'm a little more than skeptical about that. does anyone know for sure if tank trims are "universal"? if not, how to tell what brand tank i have? i'm really not trying to break the tank down, everything in styro's, old trim off, only to find out there's a 1/8" difference....

I think if you give them the correct dimensions i.e. outside dimensions of the tank you should be OK, and the thickness of the glass I think is important, I think you are doing the right thing just make sure you silicone the new one properly, maybe ask if there is a proceedure. JMHO

i've considered the thickness of the glass, too. i'm going to give good ol' scott a call around 8:30 and see what we can work out.

joe, i'm not around my tank right now and dont have any pics on my phone. i have a 125 with a center cross brace on the top trim. i want to swap out that trim with new trim that has two cross braces at 2' increments so that i can put a fixture with 3 halides on the tank without running the risk of melting the center brace with the center MH.

I just took a look at a couple of 55g tanks that I have out in the garage. Both are made by different manufacturers and both have different glass thicknesses. The outside measurements of the tanks are roughly the same, give or take about a 1/16th of in inch or so for varying thickness of silicone between the glass panes themselves along the joints. But the trim on both tanks apears to be the same size and pretty interchangeable to me.

just to be sure i'm going to take the measurements to the lfs this afternoon. luckily i still have the cut-outs from when i drilled the tank to get an accurate thickness measurement
