i would suggest doing this in small stages. divide your tank into thirds. remove one third of your cc and replace with ls :D . wait a week or 2 testing your parameters for spikes. replace another third of your cc with LS wait and test, then replace the last third. this should slow down any spikes and keep you from losing nitrifying bacteria that was growing in your cc

Sounds good to me also .... you don't want to stir the entire substrate up all at once. This way you should avoid any major spikes in ammonia and nitrites. :D

thanks for your reply but the only problem i have with this solution is that i have an undergravel filiter. how would i get it out if i only changed it in parts?

well i'd have to say your on your own with this one. this is one of the many reasons why you don't use an undergravel filter. do you have a bunch of LR in there

If you do a search in this section for Changing CC to LS you will find all the info and step by step ways to perform this. There has been success at changing everything out at once. But with everything there has been failure also. Hope this helps and let us know how it went.
