Cheap azz thermometers

Most of you know I broke my thermometer a little bit ago and all the fun I had of getting those black pellets out of my tank. I havent seen any ill in the tank so I have to assume I got it all and there is nothing out of the ordinary. I did a water test the other night and all were 0's and my nitrates were hovering at the 15 mark. Its down from before so that is good news, but not where i want them. But anyways....
I went to sprawlmart to get a new thermometer as well as water for my weekly water change. Got the floating one and came home. Went to open the packaging and as I am peeling the plastic from the cardboard I hear a pop. I was "wtf was that?" and took a look at the thermometer. It appears that the damn thing was glued to the plastic or something and when opening the packaging I broke this one. Great eh? Well, I was going to the LFS tomorrow to get my daughter a new fish, her eldest cory passed last week, and i needed carbon, so I will be picking up a thermometer too.
Where has the quality workmanship gone?

IDK....sounds like you have had some bad luck.....I have quite a few of the Wallyworld thermometers. They are my 2nd opinion ones...LOL....and I use them in my w/c buckets too....I have never had one break (KNOCKS ON WOOD REALLY HARD)
BUT the suction cups do stink

I am all about the solid core, none glass, quote-unquote unbreakable ones after I had one crack on my in during an acclimation run with some fishies. Talk about scare me silly.

I figured that the suction cups would stink and was planning on getting another one at the LFS anyways. I need to know the temp down in the sump to see if that is ok. I havent seen the crab that supposed to be down there in a while, after he jettisoned his shell cuz he was too big, and was wondering if it was too cold for the feller.

I broke a thermometer/hydrometer in my sump a while back and my xenia shrivled up like I thought it was going to waste away to nothing. I ended up having to completely shut the sump down, empty out all the water, clean every surface i could find, ran the pumps in vinegar, added all new water (Like a big water change) and started it back up.
It took about a week but everything came back to normal.
whatever was in that thing those corals didn't like right away.

What really sucks for me is that my wife had no clue what to get me for xmas. After we were done unwrapping she appologized for not getting me anything cool, but i screwed that up as I got my son Donkey Kong Country Returns, Super Mario All Stars, and Kirby's Epic Yarn. I then said, "what about the RKL-1? Its only $100?" If I had that, this wouldnt have been an issue.

I'm liking my new RKL I got for Christmas. I got the RKL+SL1 with the PH probe.
Was 188.00 after shipping to AK so that was pretty good I thought.

Well crud, I almost bought this exact one today but I thought he had said digital thermometers were unreliable. I went to ***** (friend gave us a gift certificate for xmas) to get him some more testing supplies (they didn't have them) and a new thermometer. They didn't have any glass suction cup thermometers and the rest were the stick on the outside kind like a strip except for this one. Dang it.

The Digital Coralife Thermometer works well and it's only like $7-10.

I've never had issues with the Coralife digitals and I reference them against a floating thermometer and my Aqua Controller.
