I recently installed some cheap 150 watt 15K HM lamps, Soon after I had an outbreak of green hair algae and diatom.

75gal Coral Reef Display Tank.
27gal Refugium/Sump.
Protein skimmer
Calcium reactor
100 lbs. Agonite live sand, 120+ lbs live rock.

Ammonia 0.00
Calcium 430
Temp 77.1
PH 8.25
Nitrate 10.00
Nitrite 0.00
Phosphate.25
Salinity 1.025
Could the lamps be the culprit for the algae outbreak?
Ammonia 0.00
Calcium 430
CO2
Temp 77.1
PH 8.1 Nitrate 20.00
8/14/2010
Nitrite 0.00
ORP
Oxygen
Phosphate
Salinity 1.025

most likely is the culprit. What did you have for lights before hand?

Well to be strait with you, your problem is Nitrate 10.00 and Phosphate.25.
The hair algae is getting a boost from the nitrate.

I don't treat diatoms, I treat slime algae... It is hard to determine what type of slime algae you have by looking at it. There are three big groups diatoms, dinoflagellates, and cyanobacteria. If you limit Silicates, Phosphate, and Nitrates you will have done what you can to control them through good water quality.

Light and water flow are secondary issues and I would only consider them as contributing to the algae problem if I had good water quality and still had an algae issue.

Not sure of the brand 14K that came with the 2 - 150watt, 2 - T5 fixture. I got the on the bay auction site for $400.00. I really like the fixture despite the cheap price. I believe the ballast are made by work horse.

MH are on from 11:00am - 7:00pm, I'll do the math 8 hrs. I went in with a tooth brush and brushed most of it off, 20 gallon water change and added phosphate sponge. will how fast it comes back.

Cut back your light to about 5-6 hrs and then go from there. I usually run my MH for 5hrs but I also run 2x400w MH
