You get it to grow with light and food, and the advantage is the food it needs is the stuff you don't want in your aquarium.
Ok,
basically most people put it in their fuge, or sump, usually not in their display. It needs some flow, mainly to keep it clean, and so all of the ball can get light. For light you really don't need much, I have a cheap clamp on light, like the ones you can get from Home depot, and a 6500k PC bulb, and it is going fine.
The advantages of it is that the nutrients it needs to grow is the nitrates produced by your fish waste. And it give a nice little home for pods to grow.

I'm starting to sell a hand full a week locally for 15 dollars :D
Easy stuff to grow, cheapo light, a powerhead, a little carbon and miracle grow!
You don't need the miracle grow if you are going to put it in a fully functioning aquarium. have fun!

I've had a foxface pick at it, all though they do notattack it like they do algae sheets. I have a friend and her tang will eat it as well.

So then I could just put some in my sump with a light source and it would grow and be beneficial?

Does it really help keep algae at bay in the DT?

Some people use those plastic soap buckets that have suction cups. Just to keep it from floating around the tank, and so fish can't get into it and eat the pods.

Excuse my southern lingo. I'm asking if a clump of chaeto thrown into my sump would have a significant effect in controlling algae in my display tank.
