Flood lights definetely work for a refugium. What are the Kelvins of the bulb? It should say something like 2300K, 5300K, 6500K. The higher the K, then the better the bulb for growing. I use 6500K flood lights that are 75W, but I know other people have success with 5300K or even lower.

shoot i got rid of the box let me see if i can get a pic of my set up. right now i have just the cheato and just a small layer of gravel the gravel is just for looks right now i still need live sand and or mud and some more live rock. my tank is full of live rock now so all get some more of that last. Jstdv8 no fish or crabs yet im going to put my three spot damsel in it if i can catch him all see if i can find a pic of the light on home depot

how old is your tank? some die off in the beggining is normal but your tank needs to be running for a little bit so there is constant food for the chaeto. you can get a 15W PC bulb with a built in reflector from hd and save yourself some electricity and heat.
