In an attempt to get the best water quality the most natural way I was wondering, in as much as I don’t have a refug and wanting to keep Cheato to keep my nutrients down is there a down side to keeping Cheato in a fine mesh bag with a rock to weight it down in a spot that is not going to interfere with the ascetics of my DT

I dont think its gonna get enough flow and light for a fine mesh bag,, also if it does survive how are you going to access it to trim it?, its gonna get messy, do you have enough space?look into those in tank fuges,, better than nothing,, look at the 2 doctors site.

im going to be using a bag made for in filter media so i would think the flow would be ok and i think lighting would not be a prob also where ever i place it i will be able to access it but thanks for the input i will consider it

Some people always seem to have a problem cultavating Chaeto, due to the fact they can never get the "tumbling effect"

You mean they cant get it to just grow in a huge wad? I too would like to get some chaeto but am worried about it like ruining my tank and being an eyesore.

So heat you are saying that you need the Cheato to be physically moving through the water as apposed to the water circulation around it to grow

Well, for me at least it can work 2 ways, some people are staunch beleivers that the CHAETO MUST have a psysical movement, Meaning actually tumbling to have success, Me on the other hand have had great great successs with my chaeto in my HOB fuge, but having strong water flow, flowing through it, creating the same effect, But we agree here that light and strong water flow seems to be key,, ALSO, the light issue I have 18w 67oo natural light spectrum, lighting which came STANDARD with the fuge,, MANY people are claiming, such as myself that CHAETO does much better under low wattage standard,, 18w 6700 lighting, THAN your tank lights, Hallides, VHO, PC...

Ive got a current-usa nano so I dont have anything extra at this point, nor do I have the space right now to run a sump/refugium. I didnt realize that chaeto was this involved. It definitely couldnt be rolling around like tumbleweed in my tank, theres no room. It would have, Id say medium flow and 32 watt PC lighting.
And sorry to florida joe I didnt mean to jack your thread

Joe....I have chaeto in several areas of various tanks. Your idea of putting into a clear mesh bag will work as long as you have decent light and average to good flow. I have it in one application where there is no tumbling, just good water flow thru it from a powerhead nearby and it grows well.
I read on this forum that someone uses a deep soap dish, turned upside down that has suction cups on it...can get it at any 'dollar store'...they profess to have luck with it. The chaeto goes in it and can't some out.

sounds like an idea i will try i have 520 watts of lighting so i can place it low in the back of the tank out of sight in a spot with good flow

I use the soapdish and it works great.

If you don't like the look of cheato there are othere macros that you can use like a planted tank. They grow faster so just make sure you trim them often. I have one tanl I let calupa grow and harvest it for my tang and foxface. They have learned to turn sideways and get in the soapdish.
