Chaeto is a plant and needs light to survive. If you do not put a light on your sump the chaeto will not survive and it will not do anything in the way of exporting nutrients either. It does not need much light, but you have to provide it some light.

Yes you need lighting. I use a simple s c r e w (stupid censor) in fluorescent bulb (like one of those designed to replace your regular house lights). It's one of the 60watt varieties that only uses 13w. My plants do very well under it and it isn't even a grow light.
You can get one of those metal shop light fixtures to put it in. Just clamp the light above your plants and put it on a timer. Total rig should cost you about $20.

It's like a spiral flourescent bulb. You can get it at HomeDepot or any store like it. I think I end up getting a 5300k bulb since it helps with it's growth. You get one of those shop light thing with a clamp, it works like a charm.....

If you put a florescent flood light in the clamp style worklight then you can remove the large reflector that comes on them because the flood light has a built in reflector. This will be one less thing to clean salt creep off of. This is what I did. You can get everything you need at Home Depot or Lowe's.

The round ones are what I use. I also have used one of the long ones but they don't seem to work as well as the twist in bulbs...
