Cheato

For me cheato helps control nitrate and lots of pods hang out/grow in there. Get yourself a good light for it and put it a reverse cycle or some leave it on 24/7.

google it, and u will see. it look like the coral yellow polyps, but white or brown in color.

??? it looks and feels like a green brillo pad. It is excellent in removing nitrates. I keep it in my refugium and have it under light 24/7. I trim it back once a month.

I think he was talking about the aptasia

I acquired a mature 225g tank about a month ago. Have not noticed any growth of cheato at all. Nitrates tested at 40 ppm. (Ammonia and nitrites at 0.) Have had 10,000 kelvin light on 24/7. Photo of tank is below. That's mostly new, but some mature, lava rock in the wet/dry filter area on right of sump. The cheato is in the middle, refugium area. Actually, now that I look at this photo myself, my cheato might actually be shrinking!!!
Why isn't the cheato getting any bigger?

Same kinda of situation is happening to me...
From what I have been told, trimming it back helps it grow more/faster. But have yet to truly see it happen.
It does feed off of ammonia (correct me if I am wrong) so maybe if you have a smaller stocked tank you might not get a lot of growth?

the whole point to having the stuff is to feed off of nitrates. Didn't know ammonia played any role with cheato.

cheato likes lots of water movements to do its job. also, cheato not growing could be the lack of a decent bioload.

i agree with the decent bioload comment. my first refugium acted the same way. my macros actually died off and i had to replace them with new stuff, once the tank got more stable and i had some livestock to dirty the water up a bit.
i don't think ammonia will help with macroalgae growth. if you have detectable ammonia, get it out of your tank quickly with waterchanges. you are thinking of nitrate.

Thank you for clarifying for me! I was told from someone on another forum that it feeds off of ammonia but still wasnt completely sure.
Thanks Mr_X

My bioload is light for the tank, but still ...tests showed 40 ppm nitrate, which is high. Isn't nitrate what cheato feeds on? I am not ready to increase the bioload. So what can I do to keep my cheato from dying off?

i don't know the answer to that. as i said, this happened with my first refugium. i could not stop it. eventually, it thrived, but for the first few months, it turned brown and died off.

it's a green Brillo Pad that photosynthesizes nitrates (a plant)
