I setup a friend's tank and I got him on RO water and told him to buy a TDS meter. He did and he is testing everything. These are some of the readings:
RO water: 0
Freshwater tank: 350
Tap water at his house: 95
Tap at work: 86
Water at work from water cooler: 75
Rain water: 230
and...
Toilet water at work (not sure why he did this): 80 ...hmmm...guess I will drink from water cooler!

You can get one from the online

place, your local major hardware store, maybe saltwaterfish.com?, and I am sure at other places.

Those readings of your local water are great. My well water is 198 and a place where my friend works reads 496!

Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) are the total amount of mobile charged ions, including minerals, salts or metals dissolved in a given volume of water, expressed in units of mg per unit volume of water (mg/L), also referred to as parts per million (ppm). TDS is directly related to the purity of water and the quality of water purification systems and affects everything that consumes, lives in, or uses water, whether organic or inorganic, whether for better or for worse.
