Its a good product but the price is way too much. you might want to check out AHSupply.com and see if they have the same specs that you're looking for.

a 65 gallon tank is 36"x18". that hood looks to only be 12" wide. it may look a little dumb on the tank. why not buy a reto-kit, and build, or buy, a hood made for your tank. you can then add the actinic bulbs to the tank and put them on seperate timers to simulate dawn to dusk.

Looks like a good deal to me. I paid almost that much for 2 of my 55w pcs, minus the bulbs. You can get 96w pc bulbs almost anywhere. Aquarium Concepts has them, Saltwater City and Blue Sierra to name a few close.

So you are saying I should get the 3 bulb holder and then go get the bulbs myself? That I can do. The only problem is the lights are 35" long and my tank opening is 36" long. Last is 4.4 watts a gallon good enough for a bubble coral. If yes what other kinds of corals?

what size is your tank? I've seen many 65g 4' long. But if yours is 3' or 4' I would get the IC660 ballast. You can run 2',3',4' 6' bublbs you can run pc.no lights but I prefer vho. You can get IC 660 with 2 36" bulbs for 234.50 but I would run 4 bulbs = 325. But if $$ is tight just buy the 2 for now. But 4 would be better. The IME the 660 is the best buy. Not the retro you can make your own reflector. VHO/PC reflectors aren't needed as much as haldies. the vho have internal reflectors. The reflectors may help but not as much as with halides. SO imo a wa$te. I would keep the vho close to the tank anyway. the way retros are set up they are to high depending on your canopy. They lose alot of intensity =over 12" not to much par. I keep mine 4" from the water=vho and halides @7"= maximize par but far enough for splash ime

IMO I would use a canopy for vho/pc retro fit or diy. It looks better. IMo the only thing that looks decent without a canopy are pendant halides. But yes you can use vho without a canopy you just use holders. But without a reflector you will see light. You can make a canopy pretty cheap but IMO it looks better with one. If you use a reflector most ppl use a canopy to hang the reflector so.........

you will have to decide for yourself...go w/ what your budget is...as always, if at all possible buy the best equipement up front that you can...may make for less concern later...course LOR is right, why spend all that $$$ when you could make your own custom canopy & add retro kit...no reason to go w/ ICECAP unless you have that in your budget...it is a topline brand though...you could try premiumA's offbrand retro kits if you decide to make your own canopy..that's what we have on our 135

i would not trust someone else bulbs. chances are you will have to buy all new ones and that is going to double your upfront cost. if you can do your own wiring and wood work it is very simple and cheap to build your own custom hood. it took me about 14 hrs or work (this inclues the shopping trips) to completely build and light my hood. how much is your time worth to you? since i am a student i have more time than money it is more cost effective to me to build my own system. this way i know where everything on it is and i have complete trust in a setup that i designed and built.

Buy the Icecap VHO settup it will blow PC's out of the water. Your first deal is ok, beacause you just plug and turn it on, or you can buy an Icecap and bulbs and build your own canopy.
