Ctenochaetus hawaiiensis
Black Surgeonfish (Chevron Tang)
Max. length: 11.0 in.
Range: Central Pacific
Min Aquarium size: 100gal
Foods & Feeding: Varied diet, mostly vegetable matter such as dried marine algea, frozen herbivore rations, the blue-green algea Spirulina, slices of zucchini, and broccoli. Feed at least 3 times a day.
Reef Aquarium Compatibility: Rarely bothers sessile invertebrates. Likes other surgeonfishes and tangs, is prone to ich, which is difficult to treat in a tank with invertes.
Captive care: From a rediant juvenile with a blue herringbone pattern on orange background, this surgeonfish grows into a dark olivebrown adult with thin lines on the body. It is not an overly aggressivefish and will usually coexist easily with most tankmates. Exceptions include members of its own species and close relatives. Keep only one per tank. It is likely to be picked on by other surgeonfish. SApends a major part of its day grazing, so vegetable matter must be introduced daily in an aquarium without macroalgeas.
