what is chili coral and what can i get one. I am going to set up a reef tank its 135 gallons, and i have 2-400w metal halides. My friend just told me that when i get my tank set up i can have one of his chili coral if i want it because he is running out of room, and i want to know if its a good idea to take it, im guessing it is cuz anything free is good but if its hard to care for or dangerous to my tank i dont want it.

the chilli is an ok coral BUT should only be kept in a very well established tank. needs lots of feeding and high to very high flow. since it is
non-photosynthetic it gets its food from the water not light. can be placed in any lighting condition even the dark. found in caves deep slopes and under over hangs most of the time in the same or similar conditions as a sun coral. i would not call it a beginer coral but for free its worth a shot once your tank has been running for several months to a year IMO

I have one, but I tend to think they're a poor choice for most tanks. They prefer somewhat dirty water with lots of nutrients and zooplankton, which is not good for many of our other tank inhabitants. And they are not easy at all to feed, requiring frequent direct squirts of virtually dissolved foods. Again, not great for most of your other tank inhabitants. They're pretty, but ultimately more or less doomed outside of a very specialized tank, I'm afraid.
