Hi All, Well i have decided to get a chiller for my tank. All the advice would be great. I have about 100 total gallons, and would need to drop the temp about 5-10 degrees. I would prefer a drop in vs an in line. My budget is $750 max, and i am looking for a new one. Thanks

Big Mac, How much heat are we talking about? My tank is in my living room so putting the chiller outside is not possible. Also how much electricity do they use? Thanks

Howcome it is not possible? is it due to the noise. Try looking at JBJ chillers. They are pretty quite but a little $$$. My lfs is getting me one ( 1/5hp) for about $670 if that is in your ballpark

I agree with BigMac, you really should consider an inline placed some where else. The basement, the garage, etc. I have my Aqualogic in the garage and I am very happy it's there. It is big, loud, and puts out a lot of heat, not something I would want in my living room.

well I do not want to get in trouble for this so if you want e-mail me I got a 1/3 with duel temp controller for 719.00CS POWER COOLER 1/5 HP (DUAL TEMP CONTROL) $639.99
CS POWER COOLER 1/4 HP (DUAL TEMP CONTROL) $679.99
CS POWER COOLER 1/3 HP (DUAL TEMP CONTROL) $719.99

Thank Guys, To give some more info, I live in a 1 bedroom Apt. and my tank sits opposite wall and to the left of all my windows, so to run a water line to my fire escape would not be good. My other option is to get a 10,000 btu 11.5 eer A/C ( same price as the chiller) and set the A/C for 78 and hope for the best. BTW i have a tar ballast for my MH, is the chiller noise around the same as when they fire up but more constant??
Thanks

IMO a drop in chiller would be more efficient at cooling the tank and more cost effective than the AC as long as you keep it a few feet from the tank. The AC would help keep the tank temperature from becoming outrageously high, as well as keep you cool, but may be more expensive to run. How big is the room? If the room is small the chiller will acutually add heat to your room. The noise from the chiller comes from the fan, it sounds like a window AC unit, maybe a bit louder.

Marin,
A 1/4 hp chiller uses a flow rate between 500 and 900 gph and a 1/3 hp uses 600 -1200 gph. I use a Velocity T4 running through 10 feet of 1" pvc on my 1/4 hp chiller.

just courious...your debating window ac to get you to 78 or a chiller. where do you live man. if my house gets to 78 my wife would have me working on the a/c in 5 sec or less. Let me give you a little low buck help on both ends of the world. This works well for me. I plumbed a mini/fridge/freezer full of pvc with enogh room to house an 18 pack of bud light. freezer and fittings/pvc total cost was under 250. It dropped tank about 3-4 degrees and my beer stays cold so i can watch the fish and have a beer or 12.
Just something to think about.
