I looking into a 1/5 hp chiller for my 72g. I see that there are drop in and in line types. Is there any difference in quality, performance with these 2 types or is it just perference? Can a drop in be "dropped" into the sump or fuge like a heater?
Are there any brands to stay away from because I noticed on Ebey that one chiller has a Mitsubishi motor. IMO, Mitsubishi makes the worst stuff of any company out there. I know that I will not buy that chiller.
Thanks,
Paul

I have a Arctica 1/2hp, works great...keeps my temp at 79 degrees at all times.

Hogs...Do you absolutely need a chiller? I was able to solve an early heat problem with a simple fan blowing over my sump. Just a thought.

Drop in units are more problematic than inline units.
And just for the record, Mitsubishi is one of the biggest compressor manufacturers in the world. I wouldn't judge their compressors too harshly. The other stuff they make... well...

I'm worrying about vacations. I take summer vacations and the house gets very hot. There are 3 problems with taking vacations with a marine fish tank. Heat, feeding and topping off my sump. I can get someone to feed every 2-3 days. I can hook up a cannister filter so I don't have to worry about topping off but I can't control the heat.
The metal halide's get real hot.
I have a fan blowing over the top of the tank and it's does cool it down some but not enough. The humidity on Long Island is terrible. I have a hood that I want to add but I will have to retro fit some fans inside but also, do I want them going for a week straight.

Maybe you're right but they are also one of the biggest TV manufacturers in the world and their TV's don't last. They manufactor many cars and they don't last either. I just don't want to take any chances with my hard earned money. Thanks for the input.

Horse
Power---- Tank Size(Gallons)
1/5 ---- 55-100
1/4 ---- 100-160
1/3 ---- 160-300
1/2 ---- 300-500
1/2 ---- 300-500
These are the recommended chiller sizes per AquaLogic. You should always go one size bigger when considering a chiller. You also should consider your sump.

And you should also consider future upgrades. It's far cheaper to buy a size or two larger now than to have to replace it down the road. As long as you can meet the minimum flow requirements of the unit, you can go as big as you want.
Meeting that requirement is very important though. If you don't, the heat exchanger can freeze which will destroy the chiller.

You know it's funny you mention this as my opinions of Mitsubishi fall along the same lines... varying wildly from one product line to another.
I hate their cars, I think they are total junk. They have some of the worst safety and reliability records out there.
TVs... standard picture tube TVs from them I am not a fan of. I've had a couple and they've been trouble. However, they make a very superior projection TV IMO, and the two projection units I've had from them have been outstanding sets.
I guess it's because they are all manufactuered from entirely different divisions... divisions so big it's like different companies.

I don't know if you're old enough to remember but Saturday Night Live used to make fun of Mitsubishi in one of their skits. The skit made fun of the fact that Mitsubishi made everything, even pie's.
Mitsubishi makes so many different products in so many different manufactoring fields that they can't really be really good at anything. Would you buy a Ford apple pie?

On the contrary. It was a good example. I wouldn't buy a Mitsubishi anything. Not even apple pie.
