If i have a 125 gallon tank how big (gph) does my chiller need to be in order to function properly? I didnt plan on getting one but it seems that my tank stays around 82-83 degrees during the summer so im thinking about a chiller but I really dont want to spend tons of money on one so I am curious what the average chiller would be

I'd get a 1/3 hp...You could probably get by with a 1/4hp. I run a 1/3hp on my 120 gal tank with a 40 gal sump and 30 gal fuge.
I think the chiller I use now goes for about 800.00.. Don't go cheap here cause that's what you'll get...a chiller that doesn't work.
Stay away from those Aqua Medic chiller:nope:

at that temp you dont need a chiller save your money
but i guess if you wanted to get one you would need a 1/4 horse. i think there 600.00

i run my tank at 80-83 and it does fine...better metabilism(sp.) for everything and seems to please the corals and fish...i wouldn't go any higher though

The key isn't so much the temperature your tank is hitting at it's highest, more important is how much it swings from the high to low in a day. I currently run a chiller that keeps my tank between 77 nad 79 and it is great tonot have to think about it. BTW it is a 1/3 on a 90.

The temp doesnt really move up and down much it preety much stays at 82 give or take a degree up or down. I might try a couple 3 or 4 inch fans in the canopy to help cool it off. I also raised the lights off of the glass an inch to help the heat escape into the air instead of forcing it into the water. If the fans dont work I might look into chillers.
Thanks!

If its stable @ 82 whats your worry? Many run it even higher w/o any problems. Unless your animals are showing heavy stress id leave it alone. Besides I noticed that at 78 I got a lot less coral growth than I do at 81 which is pretty much what my tank is stablized at.

I may need one myself...temp swings from around 78 -83 daily...hasn't caused any serious issues...but I don't like more than 2-3 degrees fluctuation. My volume is about 175 gal so I'm thinking a 1/4 would work for me.I was wanting to add a calcium reactor next but now I think a chiller is next. Can somebody suggest a few options to consider...decent quality and affordable?Other than Aqua Medics...
