chillers?

ok well my tank now is on its way to be a sps/clam only tank but i was thinking of investing in a chiller but my dad always gets mad at me for the electricity bill being so high even though my tank is like 400-500 watts and the house is full of 50-300w lights that are always on, so i was wondering if there are like energy star chillers or really low watt ones its only for a 55g + a 35g sump and 216 watts of t-5s but i really want my a chiller so it stays stable
any suggestions

I highly doubt they do, but possibly worth looking into....It's not like you need a huge chiller and it won't be running all the time....

One of my buddies had that situation a while ago. The tank would creep upwards of 82-84 degrees in the summer. So he drilled 2 holes in his fridge and ran some tubing through the back (only about 3 foot looped) then back to the aquarium. Used with a heater it kept his tank perfect year 'round.
Just a cheap-fix idea.

The "fridge" concept isn't as affective as people would think......The cool down or pull down just isn't there....It's been tried and tried, and isn't very effective.

The fridge idea is pretty much a myth. It doesn't work and is a waste of time. SCSInet has posted many times about this very subject in great detail. Maybe he will chime in.....

I don't know how exactly he did it, but he did manage to utilize a fridge to drop his tank temp a few degrees. It may have actually been the freezer that had the line in it. I can't remember, been a long time since I last talked to him. I remember him saying he used very thin wall hose, I don't think it was copper or anything metal though. Also, a very low flow pump was used. That's all I remember from his descriptions.
Just thought I'd try to clarify. Didn't know others had tried with no success...

Your talking tons of coils, and yes the theory or attempts have been numberous, and the degree of pull down you might get is insignificant

Yeah just like TX Reef said and as SCSInet has done, it doesn't work.....Vinyl is very poor at heat exchange, and with the proper material to exchange the heat, there would be tons of coils inside fridge and stuff, and the pull down would be very min if anything.....Besides by the time you bought the correct materials to do it to see if anything real would come of it, you'd have more invested in materials, then just buying a chiller....
It has been attempted, and no great outcome out of the experimentation with the "fridge", and if there was any real merit to the idea it would long persued and sought after......Don't you think everyone would have jumped on the "fridge wagon" if it really worked and was dependable?????

I usually post on this site lazin' in a recliner, with my laptop in my lap, a remote in one hand and a beer in the other (you don't want to know how I type), but my laptop died the other day so it took me a few days to see this.
