This is NOT a reef safe star species, and it will eat corals. If you only have fish, he might be okay. They eat clams, oysters, and other meaty foods.

Will they go for tankmates?
Generally hardy, for a seastar....it depends on the tank and parameters. Like most seastars, what is "perfect" parameter wise for fish is frequently fatal for the stars.
These guys can be fed at least once a week but I would probably do at least twice. Basically if they eat it, feed it. But vary the diet. Only feeding raw shrimp is not enough, IMO.
They are, as mentioned, a threat to sessile critters (corals, sponges) as well as anemones, snails, bivalves of all kinds, etc. Not typically a threat to fish.

I have had one of these guys crawling around in my refugium for the past year... He was given to me by a fellow reefer to help keep things clean, there are still visible pods on the glass (he seems way to slow to catch any).
Should i get him out of there or is this an acceptable animal to have in a DSB refugium with macro algae?

Can it survive by feeding on the stuff on the bottom of the tank in my substrate?
IMO, no, it is not sufficient. They should be spot fed, like any other predatory animals we add to the tank.
