I am a PC guy.
HP Pavillion. I only use it for spreadsheets and CAD. Works awesome, but I do not play games or video. The machine can do it, but I am sure if standing side by side with a mac the mac would smoke it on video and gaming.
Toshibas are cheap too, but like I look for different options than most in a workhorse.
Battery life for more run time, coupled with smaller or dual processor make a difference.
Weight, a 9lb unit feels like 50 when you have it on your neck airport to airport. I wont buy one over 7lbs it makes a huge difference if your carting it around.
Widescreen. But I play with Spreadsheets and monster sized Access databases so the wide screen helps.

You need to know what you are going to be doing on it. If you are just doing the normal, word processing spread sheets and surfing the internet then you don't need a top of the line machine. If you are doing gaming then you need a better video card and more RAM. I don't know much about Vista, but from what I understand certain versions of it are a memory hog. You should go with at leats a Gig of RAM.
Oh yeah, it is important to look at the battery life. Our notebook does not have the best battery. It is usually no problem with the way that we use it but it would be nice to have a battery that lasts longer. But then it was only $500 after all the rebates.

I have found that diehard "pc people" are only that way because they have never owned a Mac. I've had a Mac for about 2 or 3 years and I'm still finding new things I can do with it!! My son has his PC and I HATE using it!!
Anyway, once you get a Mac, you will never ever go back to PC!

Seen many friends convert to the dark side, but thier main intrests are design and video production. Cant beat mac for graphics and print layout.
I kick tires but I dont need a Mac, so I stay PC where they are cheap as dirt

A very close friend of mine is a big shot in Silicone Valley. He's been a computer geek before anyone knew what a geek was. He was always a PC guy.
He just got a new Intel based Mac notebook and is running Windows on it. He says it the greatest computer hes ever had. And from him thats saying something.
Sadly that will exceed your budget.

I work for Apple.. go Mac. I worked for PC companies for years and I have converted as a user and a career. Its the best. Although the lowest end Mac is higher than your budget. Go into a store and ask for "refreshed" product or demos. You can save good money and get something you can afford.

I just bought a Dell E1705 and its a beauty. I used Macs in college and would love to get a Mac laptop (Mac Book Pro) but they are too rich for my blood.

Not quite correct, there are thousands of little handy pieces of software available for free that are only made for PC... That's one of the reasons I stay with it.
Call Dell and tell them the laptop you want. (I got a Dell Inspiron E1705.... love it!) Once they give you the price, tell them it's too expensive, and you are going to go with another company. They will yell "WAIT!!" and then start to bargain with you, and it is amazing how low they will go...

Yes, you are right. Sorry, I forgot about that...
Still, I have seen business men switch to Mac and eventually have to switch back to PC....
