Never tried a Mac so can't comment on them. I bought my wife a Toshiba Satelite and we love it. I use a dell laptop at work and have a dell desktop at home, but the Toshiba blows both of them away. Best $950 I've ever spent.

I'm a pc guy, My family has been using Gateway machines for as long as we have had computers and only had one major problem, but that is believed to be software related. My borther has a gateway laptop, and my father has the newer model, and they both work great, with no problems.

Yes, pricewise, Gateway is the way to go.

yeah and you can get decent gateway computers straight out of the box at Best Buy now. Instant gratification for the win!

I'm a Linux sys admin so personally I would go for one of the Dell Laptops that they'll put Ubuntu Linux on now. It's a new thing they just started. I have been putting Linux on PC desktop and laptop hardware on my own for nearly 8 years now and know it isn't always easy, but Dell will do everything for you so all you need to do is what you would do on a Windows PC, minus all the virus/spyware/malware/general problems.
I'm very anti-Microsoft too, so if you don't want to go the Linux route I'd suggest a Mac.

I have a HP Pavillion also and I am very pleased with the output of my machine. It always performs well, looks nice, and it does what I need it to do.
However, I would agree, if you are doing design or graphics or gaming, go with an Apple.

PC- are more for personal use like surfin the net, downloading, games, music, and other media stuff imo.
Macs- well i use them in my film class and multimedia. they are pretty good on media construction with videos and had a pretty solid software. kinda sophisticated but when u get familiar with its easy.
Brands of laptops id have to go with dell then to hp.
i currently own the Dell XPS M2010. and it whoops as*. but youd need to increase your budget by 3x.
but i have a friend who had a similar budget to yours and he got that HP laptop called
"HP Pavilion dv2000t series". pretty good for the price too.
so between mac and pc it depends on your needs. if for personal use id go with pc.

it really doesn't matter what you get, get what you can with the budget you have set. if you were doing any serious gaming or applications you would be doing research on processors and memory and stuff....not asking what brand.
i've used pcs forever and i've on occasion touched a mac, not a big difference. its all a matter of what you have in it. for instance. i've gotten family calls on how to fix this and that....and well you buy a piece of junk you have problems. i bought my home pc a few years ago, i bought the tip top of the pc market at that time. four years later, no problems.... i'm sure the same for mac.
i've had four laptops in 8yrs. two toshiba and two dells. the dells have outlasted and out preformed the toshiba's. but if i had to place them in order of what i'd buy first....dell, toshiba, and then hp....never would i look at a gateway(sorry).
now, if i wasn't on the move i would never by a laptop. a desktop will out do a laptop any day even with the same specs.
i don't have anything against mac's, except its always been hard to find programs to run on them. not sure if mac will ever become the front runner in computer sells. i'm sure someone will take this the wrong way.
