it really doesn't matter what you get, get what you can with the budget you have set. if you were doing any serious gaming or applications you would be doing research on processors and memory and stuff....not asking what brand.
i've used pcs forever and i've on occasion touched a mac, not a big difference. its all a matter of what you have in it. for instance. i've gotten family calls on how to fix this and that....and well you buy a piece of junk you have problems. i bought my home pc a few years ago, i bought the tip top of the pc market at that time. four years later, no problems.... i'm sure the same for mac.
i've had four laptops in 8yrs. two toshiba and two dells. the dells have outlasted and out preformed the toshiba's. but if i had to place them in order of what i'd buy first....dell, toshiba, and then hp....never would i look at a gateway(sorry).
now, if i wasn't on the move i would never by a laptop. a desktop will out do a laptop any day even with the same specs.
i don't have anything against mac's, except its always been hard to find programs to run on them. not sure if mac will ever become the front runner in computer sells. i'm sure someone will take this the wrong way.
