How much light does a clam need? What kind of lighting?

I wouldn't say MH are best. A good quality T5 fixture can put out the par MH or more. There is more then one way to light a tank.

i would recomend MH's...unless you want to buy a top of the line T-5 fixture...

Metal Halides. A flashlight with a 150 watt color specific bulb could probably put out the same PAR spectrum as a MH before it hits the water; it's what happens after it hits the water. Then again it depends on what kind of clam too. Maximas, Squamosa, Derasa, Gigas - T5s will most likely do. Crocea, No. If you could post what clade of specific zooxanthellae the clam has, that would help......

I have a 4 x 54 W retro kit with SLR reflectors, 2 ATI blue +, 1 14k Giesemann and 1 10K UVL aquasun and I put out more PAR than some of the MH setups in my local club...

I second this... here are my PAR readings from my local club's meter...
I'm getting a reading of 185 on my sandbed (16" from the top of the tank) and there are people with MH that are getting 160 (150 W) and 200 (400W) so the correct T5 setup is more than enough for a clam...

T-5 or Halides should be just fine -- wattage is more dependent on the depth in the thank they are... PC lighting just doesn't seem to be enough for most for long term care.

I got a Maxima clam 5 months ago and I have her under TEK T5's (4-54w) and it is doing great!! Her mantle has grown and her colors are beautiful.

what size tank do you have the clam in?
i would like to do one in my 55g but im not 100% sure if my lights are good enough. 48" 4X54w IR and a 55g tank.

You should be fine, my tank is a 75 gl and I have her in the substrate, so a 55 should be even better. The clam is definitively one of the Main Events in the tanks, I get a lot of compliments.
