clam question?

I have what I beleive to be a maxima clam (90% sure that its a maxima) that is about 2 inches. I have heard that small clams are hard to keep and get to survive so I am trying my hardest to make this guy happy.
So the maxima clam... or clam rather...
I put him on the sand originally, and per Meowzer's suggestion, I moved him to the rock, a few inches higher, with a bit more flow and a little more light. I can back that night to find him upright in the sand. He was moving about and getting deeper into the sand.
I left him there and thought I would move him the next day.
I put him on the other side of the tank on a rock, in different flow and light, etc. and I came back to find him a long way away from the rock and in the sand again. He seems to have dug himself down into the sand alot.
His mantle is all the way out, coming out over the shell. His color looks fine and his little bumps on the mantle are all.... bumpy.
Is this okay that my clam is in the substrate and not the rocks?
Thanks!

clams are going to move where they want to move. If he likes it there, then don't bother him. If his mantle seems retracted for a long period of time, or if it is coming slightly off his shell, then I would worry that it's either in poor health or dead.
Maximas will have a long line of bumps all the way around their outer mantle. This is one of the characteristics of being a maxima clam.

The only worry in the sand is that they will attach to the glass below them. If you could slide a thin pc. of flat rock under the sand where he is, that would be better if you ever needed to move it.

Does that mean there is something wrong with it?!?!?!?
It isn't that brown, my Iphone takes okay pics but that white sand really messes with it. Also, the angle he is at makes him real dull. He is responsive and opens and closes and stuff... I have been dosing phyto and marine snow.... also reef plankton which I think is small enough for him... I hope so.

I'd move him away from the glass but just leave him in the sand. From the pics it almost looks like a crocea but I think it is a maxima. Just don't give him too much flow and leave him alone in full light in the sand and he should be happy. Oh, and keep your calcium up.

Why away from the glass?? he seems to keep digging himself over by the glass, like he likes it. When I originally put him in, I put him in the middle of the sand and slowly, he would crawl along over in the direction of the glass... what a weird little critter. oh well... I am going to scooch him over and see if he is back there in the morning. I'll let ya'll know.
Thanks for the replies!!

It is a maxima clam.
I would put a piece of rock or half clam shell under the sand/clam.
It may be moving to the glass to gain some stability, which it does not feel in the center of your sand bed (this may change with a rock under it).
Otherwise, it seems just fine.

I don't have anything to take the picture with from the top. maybe a piece of plastic wrap. I am in the process of making a viewing box.
Also, I can't seem to reach the bottom of my tank. So.... How would I go about getting this rock or shell there... I would try getting it to bound to the rock first....
I moved him yesterday night and this morning there was a little trail back down to were I just moved him from. This little clam is a riot.
Thanks again guys... I'll try to get a top view pic for you!!!

Alrighty, so my tank is too deep and I think the little guy is just so short and small that I can't really get his coloring and everything from the top oof my tank, even with plastic. :(
Sorry, I guess when he gets bigger, I will put some pictures up. Thank you guys for all of the help, I am going to try to figure out a way to put something under him.

hahahaha those commercials are hilarious...
RIP Billy Mayze.... that new lady on the oxyclean commercials doesn't sell the product well. BOO!!!
I will def. go and grab one of those. I am really tired of reaching in there everyday... I am trying the "don't put your hands in the tank, unless it's a dire emergency game."
I've been losing everytime I play...

I agree, I had the one's that belong on rocks placed and here is where they ended up. I run a 250w 20,000k light on this tank though.(night and they were pretty much tucked in the shells...lol)
