Is this lighting enough for CLAMS and SPS corals:
560W total output
2x150w HQI MH
2-130w dual actinics
:notsure:

Keep them up high, at least top 1/2 of the tank, under the bulb IMO.

If it's for the 75 in your 'tank size' I would go with 2 X 250 10 K MH's and 2 or 4 X 110 VHO actinics..You will be much happier with the look, and your corals and clams will thrive.

if i get the 2x250, im afraid of the over heating.. then ill need a chiller! i dont want a chiller.
my tanks dimensions are: 48x18x21
does anyone know of a MH hood i can get around $600?
I was going to get this:
Complete Hood Unit
2x150w HQI MH
2-130w dual actinics
6 lunar lights
mounting legs
Internal electronic metal halide and power compact ballasts
Parabolic Reflector
Two timers for enabling dawndusk effect
$600
are actinics necessary??? or is the 2x250 MH enough? any ideas of a better unit?

Yes actinics are necessary...get some 4" fans and incorporate them into your set-up..this will help with the heat issue.I have a 75 with the exact lights I described{with 4 X 110 URI Super Actinic VHO's and 2 X 250 10 K Ushio MH's}and it's awesome. The Ushio's run off two Blueline E-ballasts..and the VHO's run off one 660 Icecap ballast. It cost me about $1,000.Worth it to me.

IMO actinics are not "necessary" when running 10,000 MHs and up. Running 10,000k bulbs you may WANT actinics for the color but that's about it.
I'm running my 110g with 2-400w XM 20,000k MHs with out actinic lighting. I do have two 110w actinics I use for dusk/dawn but they do not run through the day.
I agree with the fans... I do not have a chiller... but do have fans in the canopy and run a fan over the sump during the summer. Also, 250w MH are not going to produce that much more heat than 150w MH.
btw, that's a sweet setup promisetbg!!!!

mujtba, check out the diyreef site. I paid a little more than 600 for my lighting setup. 2- 250XM 10K's on IC 250MH ballasts and 2 110 VHO Actinics on an IC 660.

ok Im thinking of getting 2x250 MH with 2x54 actinic.
Is that enough lighting to carry SPS, CLAMS and all the goodies?

mujtba, with a 48x18x21 tank and 2-250s... the lighting will support sps corals and clams. Next would be to assure high water quality!!
mona, what's your tank size??
