try him on the bottom. if you notice he starts loosing color or just looks generally unhealthy, i guess try moving him up. derasa clams are sand dwelling clams, so im guessing they wont be happy in the rockwork. but then again, ive never owned a derasa.

thats what every website says also. so i will try him on the sand. he is like 3 inches long. so feeding him wont be as important.

i dont know how this ever got started. Derasa clams are most commonly found up on the reef. ive read population studies and they all indicate that they are found on the reef amongst acropora corals. SOME can be found at the base of the reef and they are thought to have fallen from current or wave action.
a 72g tank is kinda tall, it mat be fine on the bottom but will probably do better higher in the tank

They also do well with PC lighting as well. They liek to be in sand bed although they may move around til they find a spot they're comfortable in.

your larger blue clam is a crocea not a derasa and the smaller clam is a gigas not a squamosa

Thanks C&B - I only know what my LFS told me. How do you know what is what? I can figure out what the Maxima's look like by their patterns, but the rest look very similar.

he knows. a way you can check is by looking at the shells. i thought my clam was a maxima until he told me right away it was a crocea. in my case, croceas have a smoother shell than maximas
