IMO it dosent really matter where you place them as long as the light is strong enough for them. i think it all got started by some of the books that say "gigas, derasa and squamosa CAN be found on a wide range of substrates, including sand, rubble and rock" and from that i think people just went with sand and by now its been said for so long that thats what people think
