I read afew post on here that young clams under 2 inches needed to be spot fed. That is the main reason i made sure to get a larger one. Thats good news. Sorry for the misinformation. I am no clam expert, just got my first one afew months ago.

I think what Bang Guy is saying is that you shouldn't blow phyto in their in siphon, but you can isolate and use phyto in their isolation "tank". Or just add a lot to the tank! Check out Melevsreef and look at his clam isolation/hold tank for feeding the clams. Show right when he adds the phyto and about I think an hour later the water is almost clear again from the clam filtering the water.

I got a derasa clam. Its about 4 inches, the LFS guy said I never need to spot feed it. He just told me to let it filter feed.
I do have one question though, Its in my tank it has came out some but then it goes back in real quick then comes back out again pretty quick. Is this normal?

I have 175W of MH over a 29.
But what about the closing and opening of the clam?

No not that i can think off. All i have in the tank right now is a clown fish and a pepermint shrimp, none of them were by it. Maybe a hermit though.
A frogspawn is above it, its not shadowing it though.

it will get everything it needs from the light.
its somewhat normal for the clams to open and shut when first introduced to your tank. there kinda jumpy and getting used to their surroundings. just give them time and theyll stop unless you frighten them by sticking your hand in the tank or something.

lol, i noticed.
anyway, most important imo is to just leave it alone. if it moves, just let it be. they dont like tob epicked up and repositioned. ive had clams move like 3 or 4 inches over a few days. theyll eventually find a place their happy.

oh, and dont go crazy adding phyto to your tank because you think it will help the clam. to much phyto will pollute your tank, especially with a 29g. i have a 30 gallon with a crocea about 3", a squamosa about 5", and a maxima about 2" and i dont add anything to the tank. no spot feeding, just let tehm filter the water and use the light.

i mean, if he falls upside down or behind the rockwork or something, then go and pick him up. if hes just at an angle where you dont like him, for his sake just let him do his thing.
