Clarkii keeps digging

I just added 75 lbs of southdown in my tank. My clown will not stop digging in it. The water will never clear up. When it's just about clear, he kicks up a big ol dust cloud. It's really starting to irritate me. What can I do to stop this so I can enjoy my tank?

it will take some time, but if you have LR or LS in the tank allready, the smaller particles in the SD sand will become covered with the good bacteria and wont be so easy to stir up. I have 150 lbs of SED in my tank, added 20 lbs of LS from the lfs to seed it and it cleared up in 2 days.
If you can, add a few pounds of LS- it will help.

Ill try that.
But the clown does a "brake torque". He will back up, use his tail to stir up alot of sand and use his front fins to keep himself from propelling forward. My sand bed was about5 inches allover to start, now it varries from 1 inch to 9 deep in places.

Jester,
I am going through the identical situation with my Clarkii in my 75 gallon tank.
Although the fish has stopped doing it now, and all is well aside from the mounds and hills of sand all over.
I guess we have a choice to make.
Inconsistent DSB throughout the tank with clown
OR
Level DSB minus one fish
I doubt there anything we can do to change the fishes natural behavior.
Do you have an anemone ?

No broomer, no anemone.
I was thinking of getting a bubble tip, but my lighting is insufficient. I only have the standard 20 watt floresenct and don't want to spend the couple hundred on lights for this tank.

I have 2 maroons that are always busy, sometimes they will leave it alone for a little while, then the girl (The big One)starts up again. I have a book about clowns that says that behavior is them showing everyone how tough and mean they are. LOL. :D Really that is what is says. You just have one really tough clown. <img src="graemlins//uhuh.gif" border="0" alt="[U-Huh]" />

My female Sebae does the same thing. Especially when i add something new to the tank or make adjustments. I think she's just showing that she's not scared. She's a real b**tch, especially towards the other fish in the tank.

Sounds like she (presumably needs a mate, and is digging a nest against the glass).

I couldbe wrong, but think ofthe terror your clown makes in the snd, then think of what it will do to your anemone. Not a pretty picture IMO. Tough stuff is keeping anemoneas alive with clowns. :)
