Yeah, I will definitely have to be much more diligent with the top-offs. After much research on the very few lights that would fit on my tank, I decided the top-offs would be worth it just to have the halides. I can't wait to see how much things start to grow under it. I got my first frag of acro yesterday in anticipation of getting the new light.

Absolutely your going to love it. Make sure you acclimate your tank to the new light. I did when I got them and I still lost every mushroom I had, not that, thats a bad thing. But they still bleached and melted.
One other bit of advice, the bulb that current gives you. Its ok, nothing great, you will love it for the first few months. I did, now i see that its just not a good quality bulb although it works, my colors are a bit washed out. My next bulb will be a higher quality, XM or Radium bulb. I have tried all 3 types of lighting, PC, HO-T5 and MH. My own personal opinion, I love metal halides the best. The give that shimmer that no other lamp has. Good Luck with it.

Thanks for the advice, Perfect. I am currently running a 12 hour photo period with my PCs. Where would you start with the MHs?

2 hrs a day for a week.
4 hrs a day for 2 weeks
5 hrs a day for a week
6 hrs a day for 2 to 3 weeks
8hrs a day for the remainder... IMO 8hrs is my limit. a 24gal display with a 150w halide is a lot of light. Remember its amount of light that is more important than duration. Lack of amount leads to longer duration. More intense the less you need them on for.

Great schedule, you will certainly have to be very careful with the new light.
But from a 2x150w sunpod user, Congrats on the new light! you wil be very happy!!!
I used the stock bulb for a year, but I didnt have sps for most of that time. Then I switched to Aqualine AB 10k bulbs. They are great for par and decent for color, better than other 10k though.
Then I switched to phoenix and they are amazing. If you are ok with a blue look, the colors on the sps are great with the phoenix and still good growth.
The 20k radium is top notch too and may be my next bulb.

Go with a pheonix 14K bulb they are awsome I love mine. When you upgrade. If you like the blue of actnic you wont be happy with the 10k bulb from the sunpod. The led doesnt make up for the actinics. You cant even tell they are on with the mh on.

On the website, it shows that it is coming with a 14k bulb....

I'm sure this bulb is still nowhere near the other bulbs you mentioned, but I will probably give that one a shot for a little while at least. But I will DEFINITELY go with one of the better bulbs a few months down the road.

you'll love the stock bulbs at first (especially if you havent had halides) then like everybody else it will be on to the search for the perfect bulb for the rest of your life. I've had the Aqualine AB bulb in 175w and the stock sunpod bulb has simular coloring. neither is blue enough but with the AB bulb growth was crazy (stock sunpod bulb growth is slow to no existant for me with the SPS. everything else grows as expected). The AB bulbs are also freakin $80 a peice. I think I'm going to try 10k reflux for a happy medium (simular could use a little more blue color with PAR and cost inbetween the stock and AB bulb). I do like the Ushio 20ks purplish glow. perhaps I'll give those a try.
As for the 20" sunpod vs the 20" extreme Pro you made the right choice for the simple reason current usa are the ONLY company that makes bulbs to fit the 20" nova extreme pro. you have NO upgrade options with it.
direct comparison from another forum

sunpod

nova Extreme pro

the extreme pro looks a little better stock for stock BUT the stock sunpod bulb is far from the prettiest halide bulb and since no one else makes bulbs in that T5 size only the sunpod can be improved upon.
