I got my 1st cleaner clam today, and it came in a bag with no water. Do I have to do anything special with it, or just drop it in the tank.
Will it disappear into the sand or something??
Cleaner clams come from tempered waters up and down the eastern seaboard (a few have been popping up from the Gulf). Thing is, our tanks are exponentially warmer then the temps they are used to. I don't know a single person that used them that still had them after 6-8 months or so.
Get yourself a bowl or cup of tank water. Set the clam in it and wait for it to spit. When you see all the dirt in the water then place him on your sand bed. I had mine in for a few months. Got them in 2 of my tanks. Bought them from the grocery store seafood department.

Did it sink into the sand yet?
I asked SWF.com that exact question...and she told me that if they died, they would open, and somehow something (can't remember exactly what she said) would make it work its way up out of the sand. SO I am guessing if we don't see it..that's good.
