Is it normal for a cleaner shrimp to eat a scarlet hermit crab????

Not neccessarily. I watched one of my cleaners rip a hermit out of its shell, eat the meaty part and throw it on the bottom. It only started after I added another cleaner though, then the two of them turned vicious, eating my hermits and then ripped the legs off my decorator crab and ate them. I finally sent one to a new home and no problems since.

Based on my experience (10 monts with shrimp), cleaners are never mean! Now you can get a demented one but mine are always push overs. They run from everything that shows the slightest aggresiveness...even my sexy shrimp has run them off!!!!

actually it's like a one in a million but about maybe 2 years ago someone on this site had the same problem and even witnessed it on several occasions of a cleaner killing his hermits. you might want to think about feeding the shrimps more.

What kind of cleaner shrimp? Because alot of shrimps are cleaners. Such as the scarlet skunk cleaner, fire shrimp, and a peppermint shrimp.

It was probably a dead hermit or its molt. But you could have one of the demented ones as mrdc said.

his was a skunk cleaner, and it wasn't dead before he got to it cause the guy saw the crab moving before it got attacked.

If you are up on the northern border, I believe I have your shrimp (Jacque). If you are who I think you are that is, which I am pretty sure you are. Anyway, Jacque is doing great! I did see him/her (?) eating a blue leg hermit today, I noticed the hermit out of its shell yesterday and it was dead. If the shrimp ripped it out of its shell yesterday, why wait till today to eat it? Either way, I better get Jacque some meaty food other than my crabs I guess!

My cleaner shrimp also enjoys eating dead things one time my damsel fish was sleeping and the shrimp thought it was dead so he tried to eat it then found out that it was alive . The fish woke up and both creatures were scared half to death
